Earthworks Volume Calculator

Precise calculation of earth volume to be excavated or moved. A tool for professionals and investors planning earthworks.

Calculate Earthworks Volume

How Does the Earthworks Volume Calculator Work?

Volume Calculation Methods

The calculator offers three methods for calculating earthworks volume, adapted to different types of excavations:

  • Rectangular Excavation - the simplest form of excavation with constant length, width, and depth
  • Trapezoidal Excavation - excavation with sloped walls, where top and bottom dimensions differ
  • Irregular Terrain - for areas with irregular shapes, where the area and average depth are known

Loosening Coefficient

During excavation, soil loosens, which increases its volume. The calculator accounts for this effect by applying an appropriate loosening coefficient depending on the soil type:

  • Sand - loosening coefficient: 1.15
  • Clay - loosening coefficient: 1.25
  • Gravel - loosening coefficient: 1.2
  • Silt - loosening coefficient: 1.3
  • Rock - loosening coefficient: 1.5

The volume after loosening is crucial when planning transport and storage of excavated material.

Calculator Applications

The earthworks volume calculator is an essential tool in the following situations:

  • Planning excavations for building foundations
  • Preparing bids for earthworks
  • Estimating excavated material transport costs
  • Planning terrain leveling work
  • Calculating the amount of material needed to backfill excavations
